Hi All,

I received the attached report of the antics of the MBBC group on the Interclub Bay Cruise held last month from Therese Marty,
I also have copies (not brilliant copies, but copies anyway) available of the DVD shot of the club's magnificent performance of two songs that propelled it into a distant second place (behind Therese Marty's magnificent banjo compilation), and featuring Jock's performance in one of the arrangements.

See me if you would like a copy...............tis but good for a chuckle!

More notice soon on an organised weekend boating trip, and also I am taking ideas for a Christmas Cruise.

Cheers,
David Mason-Cox

Simply cruising was the theme for this year’s Interclub Annual Bay Cruise
We’ve been simply cruising, we’ve been simply cruising,
Across the bay go southing, salty air and boozing,
Trouble we’ve had with Sarge’ing, we’ve been simply cruising
There is Jo-Dee, Buragin, Foxy Lady, Sea All,
Kai Mana, Real Thing, Sea Cat, and Vigilant
Sunseeker, Sunshine, Mischief, Wyuna 3
Idle Mind, Spirit of Grace, other boats from other places
We are the mob from Scarborough, and we’ve got JOCK!
Imagine a group of 25 or so boaties singing the above in fine voice to the tune of” I’ve Been Everywhere” on a beautiful late September evening  . The choir master is David Mason Cox...The location is Stradbroke Island Dux’s anchorage ... the (captive) audience like minded boaties. The event is the annual hotly contested Interclub Bay Cruise Talent Quest.
Imagine the camaraderie and pride of the Moreton Bay Boat Club delegates marching under the club banner in the opening and closing ceremony of the Simple Olympics. The competitiveness of the volleyball, tug of war, scrabble, triathlon, fishing competitions and dinghy races .The intense concentration of the trivia teams, the argy bargy of the sailing challenge.
The Interclub Bay Cruise is in its 37th year. It is a week of fun and water based activity on Moreton Bay. This year 80 boats and about 300 people took part. Our family has done this 8 times and we’ll be back next year. It is fun for all ages; hot showers can be taken each night. Most of the meals are organised by the various clubs at a minimal cost and so it’s a lovely way to go cruising and get to know your boat and Moreton Bay whether you are very experienced or new to boating.
Those that travelled south for the cruise from the Moreton Bay Boat Club had a wonderful time, lots of fun and some priceless memories of the week. Moreton Bay Boat Club won the trivia competition, the talent quest, nearly won the sailing challenge, and Jock won the twinkle toes dancing award. The weather was perfect, company convivial, and we are all  looking forward to  next year.
Our club delegate, John Elliot from Sea All was the Bay Cruise Vice Commodore and along with wife Maria was part of a hardworking committee of members from the various boat clubs on Moreton Bay that put a lot of work into making this year‘s cruise so enjoyable for all that took part .It was ‘simply’ the best Bay Cruise yet.

MAY 2012 BRIBIE WEEKEND

An absolutely gorgeous boating day/weekend – clear blue skies, little breeze (until later on the Sunday afternoon), balmy 24 degrees, everything perfect for boating, until some clot did not realise it was Mothers Day until too late – my humble apologies.

I should also mention that the same clot also was given a late slot to get the boat out on the hard that weekend, so the boat was unable to go – I drove over anyway.

At Bongaree, the usual empty BBQ and lean-to spot where we congregate was a bit like every spot anywhere near the water everywhere, full of families spending recreation time together in celebration of Mothers Day. So the beachfront was a bit like rush hour at Piccadilly Circus, nevertheless Tony and Wendy Kelly (Quoll) found me as soon as I arrived and we had a chat and solved a few of the worlds problems.

On my way over Ed Barker (Waiben) phoned and let me know that he along with Peter Rigney and Eric Welch were heading back, as they had all gone over the day before. Later on Geoff Craig (Buragin) along with Jock as crew came out for a run, dropped the pick momentarily, we spoke on the phone, and he then headed back to Scarborough. Ray and Sue Aukett (Mavourneen) were onboard, at anchor just in front of the BBQ’s and they also weighed anchor about the same time.

Me, I found a free hot plate, cooked and ate a few “Woolies” prawns, then returned the way I came.

Beautiful day, a few made the effort, but the organisation was the let down – my fault, we will do better next month.

Unless there is another ungazzetted Government holiday, or unless there is an outbreak of war, or unless someone else points out something I have missed, our next foray across the pond to Bribie for the day/weekend is now planned for 16/17 June. The tides will be right with a 1354 low on the Sunday, so we will have an incoming tide to help us home.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Cheers,

Easter 2012

EASTER REPORT 2012-04-10

Easter has come and gone again, and long weekend (or longer) boating is done now for me until the Interclub Bay Cruise in September (begins this year Sat 22nd Sept).

True to form, I managed to completely cock-up the boating venue for the break, whilst for a change, the weather proved to be magnificent for boating.

Years ago on previous trips to Lucinda Bay I marvelled at the beautiful benign anchorage with its sparkling clear water and white sandy bottom, now unfortunately after two years of trying to organise a trip and meeting place for boaties of all persuasions to gather, it appears that in spite of all of its beauty and attributes, Lucinda Bay has decided that it may not behave well enough to consider a re-visit next year.

Gorgeous boating weather, but very sloppy anchorage made even worse with the morning westerly making it a tad uncomfortable, so much so that most deserted for calmer areas.

So to my boating version of the Easter break. Having already bought the boat around to the club on Thursday, I loaded up and headed off leisurely on Good Friday for the M8 beacon (a turning mark for the Gladstone yacht race) where I anchored up around 11am just inside the mark in pole position to view the boats coming through.

The maxis are one thing, and an experience to be there that close as they flew past, but it was our club boats and how they were doing that held my interest. Samuri Jack has already established quite a buffer in front of the closely competing Dream, Midnight Oil, and Synchronicity, all were seriously “trucking” when they eased sails going around the mark from a reach to a broard reach almost a shy run. The creaking noises emitted of straining sheets is truly something to behold.

Without waiting for all the tail enders to get through, I up-anchored and headed over to Lucinda Bay, and anchored in about 8ft of water an hour off low tide. A bit sloppy but ok.

David and Susie in “Kai Mana” and Ron and Carol in “Attitude” had already ventured into the calmness of the Blue Hole, Rob and Val in “Foxy Lady” went south to the Sand Hills to get into the Blue Hole on the next mornings tide, whilst there were a few club boats at Lucinda including Derek on “Shar Shar”.

Before dusk we were joined by Scott and Roseanne in “Miss Toorbul”, and by then it was getting even more sloppy.

After an hour or two solving the worlds problems with Scott, they up-anchored and headed back to Redcliffe, and I went to bed.

With the next morning and the wind from the SW, it was “rolling the milk out of my coffee” there and the anchorage was being quickly deserted. I considered options of joining others in the Blue Hole and Sandhills area where Peter of “Eyewitness 1” was, along with the others, or even going north to join those including Clive in “Lucky Lady” in the Bribie Passage.

In the end I headed back to the club where I could continue giving the boat a much needed spring clean, which I then did over the next couple of days, returning to my pontoon mooring on Monday.

So valiant cruisers of all boating types, please be aware that whilst I do try hard to organise something on regular monthly basis for us all to enjoy and participate in, my record of picking weather conditions with our cruises can only improve.

Even our usual monthly Bribie weekends have been fraught with bad or deteriorating weather, so hopefully under the law of averages, they will only get better.

The next weekend/day trip is planned for Sat/Sun 12/13 May – Bribie. Make the effort and join us.

CRUISING REPORT FEB 2012

CRUISING REPORT FEB 2012

Hi all,

The cruising section of the MBBC consists of boaties of any persuasion who are keen to get away for a day/weekend/or longer and just want to enjoy the water going past the boat as they sit there either on their vessel, or on the sand ashore, in company with other like minded souls and enjoying the conviviality of each others company. It is also a chance for those of somewhat less experience, confidence, or inclination to be away in company with others who may be able to assist them find that confidence to more enjoy their own boating experiences.

The only stipulation for anyone to join with us is :-
BOATS AND PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUESTED AND EXPECTED TO COMPLY WITH QLD TRANSPORT SAFETY LAWS, HAVE THEIR INSURANCE IN ORDER, AND BE AWARE THAT THE SKIPPER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF HIS VESSEL AND CREW

Our first cruise for 2012 will be Saturday/Sunday 25/26 February to the Bribie Passage with a BYO BBQ planned for the Sunday lunch at Bongaree, just north of the Bongaree public jetty. Some may not be able to get away for the whole weekend and that is not a problem, even if you can only make it over on the Sunday, you are more than welcome to join in. The tides will be helpful for those who venture over in the morning and return in the afternoon. Come and join with us.

The next cruise will be organised for Easter at Moreton Island. It is planned to watch the Brisbane - Gladstone yachts go past at the M8 beacon on Good Friday (6th April) then continue on and anchor in Lucinda Bay just south of Tangalooma and spend a couple of days there, or exploring further afield, before heading back.

The other happening of interest will be on Wednesday 22nd February there will be a no cost basic Navigation and chart reading night held at the MBBC from 6pm.
This has been a previously popular happening with those who have attended, and it has been requested again. For those who wish to attend the following items will be helpful - a chart of Moreton Bay, pencil, paper, chart plotter/divided ruler, calculator. As we will have to set up large tables so as to get the charts on, please call to reserve your spot.

I look forward to catching up with you somewhere on the water.

BAY CRUISE REUNION LUNCH 6/11/11

Our club was very well represented at the Bay Cruise Reunion Lunch held this year on Sunday 6th November at the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club at Manly. Whilst we did not come home with any of the trophies presented we again gave notice that the MBBC is a big and supportive participant in the Annual Interclub Bay Cruise.

Nearly 100 people attended and along with myself, they included Mike and Sue Kinder, Chris, Therese and Emily Marty, John, David, Deanne, and Dominic Elliott, Susie and Brodie James-Brown, Sharon, Barry, Jamie and Ryan Felshow, and new members who attended the cruise and joined our club a week later Nick, Nicky, Oliver, Becs, and Alice Morgan.

It was a good day to catch up with everyone, an excellent buffet meal was put on by the MBTBC, and the general camaraderie was enjoyed by all, even if the cruise re-naming of “Sunshine” saga was extended by Susie presenting me with a “just add water” hand towel with Little Miss Sunshine emblazoned on it as a keepsake – much to the Marty’s mirth. It appears I am being ganged up on!

The winner of the Best Host Club of the cruise was the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club for hosting the Italian Night at their grounds at Southern Haven on South Stradbroke, mind you the success of this event was ably assisted by the sing-a-long musicians which included a number of MBBC members.

The major club participation trophy is for the Best Participating Club this year was adjudged to be the BOAT club. Not only did they have good participation numbers, but they also hosted a very successful final evening at Boathaven which unfortunately I, and a number of our members missed due to heading back home a day early.

The John Hattrick Trophy awarded to the best participating family on the cruise, this year went to Patrick, Cheryl, and Jordy Tessier of the boat “Gracie Lee” from SYC.

Finally, John Elliott, this year’s Rear Commodore who, along with wife Maria, did a magnificent job as Committee members and as our club Bay Cruise delegates, are to be thanked for all their efforts, they represented our club with distinction.

All of us are looking forward to next year’s cruise already.

CRUISING WEEKEND – 22,23/10/11

CRUISING WEEKEND – 22,23/10/11
With an excellent forecast for a change, the weekend planned at Bribie for the 22nd. and 23rd. October looked inviting, and was. The morning was a tad more breezy than anticipated but had not kicked up the bay at all, just a bit of south easterly spray over the windows as we crossed the bay. It soon dropped off and by lunchtime it was magnificent.

Clive on “Lucky Lady” led off on the Friday up to White Patch and was soon followed by Quinnie, Lorraine, and Julie in “Emma”, and Mike, Sue and family aboard “Mahogany” All of whom ventured up the passage on Saturday.

Gary Trost in the houseboat “Slack Attack” made it halfway across the pond, but was getting a tad wet, so altered course and overnighted in the Caboolture River.

Scott and Roseanne in “Miss Toorbul” came out of the creek on the tide Saturday evening and overnighted off the VMR just north of the bridge, and Mal and Bev in “Chappie” dropped their pick near Bongaree – ‘tis hard to get a 40’ yacht under the Bribie Bridge without some serious modifications. They headed back on the Sunday morning, but hopefully will join up with us again.

Peter and Bev in “Austral Star” preceded my arrival in “Sunshine” at Bongaree as some of the others came down from areas north of the bridge, and whilst they took the option of remaining aboard they were with us in presence and spirit.

Once ashore we were then joined by Sharon and Barry Felschow and kids who had driven up as “Sunseeker” is apparently in a current state of temporary flux. Nigel and Tressa Edwards also made the detour to join with us on their way back from Caboolture, and whilst their visit may have only been fleeting, it appears that we may well be joined on a more regular basis by “Aqua Vita”, business and sporadic world travel notwithstanding.

We were also joined by Mark Calam and Janice who ventured over from the club in the 17’ tinny.

After a few lies and a few laughs the barbie was fired and most of the interest and comment was then centred on the size of Clive’s steak and the whereabouts of both the head and tail of the cow that he heated up and was seen to demolish for his luncheon repast. As he was seen to mention when others went near the barbie, and with apologies to the honourable Crocodile Mick Dundee - you call that a steak……..this is a steak!

Again, following further lies and laughs we all packed up and headed back to our various Scarborough moorings, leaving Scott and Roseanne to await the tide to get back up Elimbah Creek.

According to the feedback it was an extremely enjoyable weekend/day with all happy with the venue, and the option of being able to make it either a weekend or day trip. Due to work commitments, I have been only getting over for the day, but hopefully in the future I can re-organise my time better and get over later on the Saturday next time.

All of which leads in well to the next weekend/day trip planned to be the final one prior to Christmas and will be the 19th and 20th November, hope to see you all there.

Interclub Bay Cruise 2011

The Bay Cruise has been and gone for another year. It was enjoyed by and participated in by 15 boats in total from the MBBC.

Merv and Marlene from “Rimfire”, and Mick and Gayle from “C-Jade” were both able to join the cruise for the two nights at Southport at the VMR on Wednesday and at the Yacht Club on the Thursday. Merv and Marlene travelled down in the Motor Home, whilst the Hamiltons hosted Mick and Gail on “Grecher”. Hopefully both of their boats will be back and operational in the near future.

The cruise began on Saturday 17th September at the RQYS grounds at Canaipa on the North Eastern tip of Russell Island. “Sunshine” and I had travelled down in company with David and Susie James-Brown in “Kai’ Mana”. A four hour trip with the tide behind us all the way. We arrived and anchored up in the creek, got organised with raising the previous Bay Cruise flags, getting the dinghy in the water, and tidying up, and then went ashore for the 2.00pm sign–on.

With 85 boats listed to take part and in spite of the 28 newbie “virgin cruisers” there were a lot of old friends to catch up and re-acquaint with, as well as our own good members. So a few wines were shared, some lies told, and following the usual cruise welcome from the Commodore and Committee we enjoyed the “Sarge’s” attempts to hand out fines, exhort money, or produce outlandish tutus and suits for alleged miscreants to wear for 24 hours. All good fun.

The following morning we up-anchored and headed south to the SYC’s “Dux Anchorage” on the northern end of South Stradbroke Island where it was the start of the cruise’s kids and adult organised activities. Our Bay Cruise club delegates John and Maria Elliott, with John the Bay Cruise elected Rear Commodore this year, were the organisers, arrangers, supervisors, and main culprits of numerous team challenges of varying degrees of difficulty and/or stupidity, which more than adequately catered for most of the cruise kids activities and because of that a lot of their parents as well.

That evening we gathered for the Trivia night at Dux, where the MBBC distributed the club donated port, cheese, and biccies. Whilst our collective brain power was not enough for any of our 3 or 4 trivia teams to have come away with the winnings, we certainly received a lot of recognition for the port.

On the Monday morning we moved again further south to the grounds of the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club “Southern Haven” situated just south of Tipplers on South Straddie, where we spent the next two nights. On Monday the MBTBC crew did us all proud with their Italian themed evening and luke warm “spag bol” followed by a number gathering around the camp fire and joining in with the sing-a-long along with some of the (slightly) musically inclined cruisers.

Following more kids activities during the day, the Tueday evening saw a couple of films shown on the large screen on the outdoor carpet area of the MBTBC. The early evening was appreciated by many.

Wednesday dawned with all moving south again past the Seaway and into the Southport Aquatic Basin (Bums Bay) where some went off on organised trips to Seaworld, some took advantage of the VMR and did a radio course, and others just rested their eyes behind closed eyelids. Then to the VMR for the usual round of Committee updates, SYC berthing arrangements for the next day, the “Sarge”, and evening spit roast meal which was followed by the “Casino” play gambling night for the adults, whilst the Elliotts (with a couple of helpers) ushered all the kids into a backroom for more prize orientated games. The kids all had a ball, as did most of the adults.

The next morning we all moved to the Southport Yacht Club Marina, where between the SYC and the Cruise Committee, they managed to squeeze all the boats into berths. It was very well organised and coordinated by Peter Shaw of the Bay Cruise Committee. A number of both Committee and senior cruisers were given areas of the marina to look after boats that had been previously allocated both their berth and the exact time they were due in, and without too much anxiety, all were berthed and ashore well before lunch. Some of us took the time to avail ourselves of the laundry facilities there, and still be free by lunchtime, and ready to observe the afternoon fashion parade put on by Musto and the SYC for the cruise benefit.

My offer of being a model in the parade was politely declined.

That evening at SYC we had a buffet meal followed by a “cent” auction style giveaway of a large number of donated prizes/items. Everything from bottles of scotch to two 2L tins of very good red paint – that I am still wondering what I am going to do with – GT stripes anyone?

The next morning we had the Commodore salute and sail past just south of the Seaway on our way back north to the clubs south of Tipplers. It is a spectacular sight seeing 85 boats all dressed up and in line passing the Commodore’s boat and acknowledging his and the Committee’s work for the cruise this year.

The sailing challenge began soon after at the Deep Hole where the challenge is not so much that of winning a sailing race, but of participating in an event whilst underway whether or not the boat was sailing was deemed immaterial. A couple of noteworthy occurrences at the start line at which I officiated at, was the extra points gained by Geoff off “Buragin” as he 180’d in front of the oncoming fleet and proceeded across the start line backwards with a number of cruise kids dancing on its bow to rather raucous music. Also of note was the Martys on “Real Thing” trying to throw Tim Tam bribes to me, failing to make the distance between boats, so promptly doing a 360, came back and picked up the (still) floating Tim Tam, and eating it themselves. They lost points for that. Mind you, I need Tim Tams like I need a hole in the head, but that was not the point.

That evening we had the usual committee briefings and the Sarge at the Gold Coast Boat Clubs grounds, and following a BYO BBQ there was the annual cruise Talent Quest. We had the talented Marty family again flying the flag for the MBBC, where this year Emily was acclaimed for her Acker Bilk clarinet rendition, and was ably supported by Therese’s banjo along with Brodie James-Brown on percussion.

A few of us headed back on the Saturday morning missing the final evening at the BOAT club, but I have been told that the Elliotts were again to the fore with the tryathlon on the Saturday.

Thanks to all who joined us, it was a fun trip, and especially thanks to the Elliotts. John and Maria did a brilliant job right throughout the cruise in all the roles that they were responsible for, and bought nothing but praise and a lot of recognition to the MBBC from all who participated. Well done to both of them.
